I searched for the proper analogy for the fit of this garment as it glared back at me in the mirror. The words that came to mind were "gorilla suit". Yes indeed, a very loose, puffy, blue, twisty, gorilla suit.
Yes, I did a gauge swatch. Yes, I measured my chest and chose the appropriate size. So what went wrong, you ask? I can't be entirely sure, but my preliminary post mortem is that this pattern was never really scaled properly for the larger sizes. I say this because the sleeves and shoulders were large enough for someone else to climb in and make me a two-headed gorilla.
I'm not sorry that I knit the sweater. It was a fun pattern. I am currently cannibalizing it to knit a shadow cable cardigan.

I'm also a large size (42" Bust) and you're right about the propotions not being sized correctly. If you follow the pattern, the arms are HUGELY long (as is the body (it would be almost mid-thigh on me and I'm 5'6").
I'm making the 2nd largest size.
My solution was to change the pattern -- I made the sleeves shorter than the pattern called for (I think I have 6 diamond panels down the arm) and made the body much much shorter than in the pattern, which meant starting the waist ribbing much sooner (about 1.5" sooner than called for). Otherwise, the ribbing would start at the top of my hips.
So, don't feel too bad about your sweater -- the pattern was definitely not tested properly on the larger sizes!!
