Hi Rosi,
I don't think the tired look of your blog is because of they way you deal with pictures.....I personally think it the back ground with the very pale 50's appliance inspired colores, which neither match nor contrast any normal and / or natural color.
Maybe a one color back ground, or just a white back ground would do the trick....
Just my thoughts....
